Intracranial Jewelry
“I realized that as a songwriter the only thing I really do is make jewelry for the inside of other people’s minds. Music is noting more than decoration for the imagination, that’s all it is” - Tom Waits
I have very little art on my walls at home. I used to feel guilty about it, but then I realized that I do own quite a bit of art, but almost every piece of art I own is in my closet or jewelry box.
My body is my canvas, my gallery.
A piece of art hung on a wall is lovely, but static and secluded. It can only be appreciated and enjoyed by those who pass through the thresholds of the owners and curators.
The art that I collect, display (and now create!): the scarves, bags, earrings, pendants, etc…all of these pieces are alive, dynamic, accessible. No entry fee or invitation required.
So many of the pieces I wear have sparked deep conversations and deeper friendships. So that realization impacted the media and substrates that I use to create my art. I began to focus on textiles and jewelry, the things I love to buy, instead of printing on traditional canvases. I had to honor my actual self instead of forcing myself to be someone I am not.
