Sami, 2023
Silk dye on habotai silk, 6x24”
In February 2023, I was an artist in residence at Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, Colorado. I used my residency to explore various forms of textile painting and surface design. With ample time and space to experiment freely, I developed a way to use Coloratura to paint on fabric directly, using suspended conductive film as an easel. Sámi, inspired by a folk song from the indigenous people of Scandinavia, was the first piece I created using this method.
Chromatic Canvas, 2023, 12x8”
Marbling paint on paper
In this piece, I use water marbling and a strategically placed mirror, allowing the pigments to overtake and distort my reflection as they evolve and decay over time.
I Came to the Water, 2023
Sumi ink on habotai silk, 11x11''
As a part of my full-length performance “Chromatic Canvas”, this piece emerged out of my desire to integrate my vocals into the visual component of my work. Inspired by the breathwork technique of traditional suminagashi artists, I use my voice to manipulate the pigment and carve out abstract patterns.
