Chromatic Canvas

8x14
Acrylic on Paper

Chromatic Canvas was created via Coloratura, a system of paintbrushes that create music and art simultaneously. Each brush is assigned to a different color and musical note to simulate synesthesia.

Using water marbling and a strategically placed mirror, this piece is a visual journey into self-perception. As the pigments evolve on the water's surface, they subsume my reflected image, prompting a meditation on identity and transformation. Chromatic Canvas was created via the technique of suminagashi, an ancient form of Japanese water marbling dating back to the 9th century. In suminagashi art, pigment is carefully applied to a bin of water drop by drop, creating beautiful abstract concentric circles that ebb and flow with the movement of the water. Once the design is complete, it can be transferred to fabric or alum-treated paper to permanently preserve it.
